El Sd.Kfz 4 era un semioruga de 4´5 toneladas basado en el vehículo blindado Maultier que fue desarrollado tras comprobar las dificultades experimentadas en la movilidad del Frente Oriental. El barro y el hielo jugaban en contra de los vehículos convencionales de ruedas de modo que se tuvo que buscar una solución en los vehículos semiorugas. El vehículo elegido fue el camión Mercedes-Benz L4500S (4x2) con una suspensión Horstmann en su eje trasero. Otro camión del mismo peso fue el fabricado por Büssing, el Büssing-NAG L4500S, pero no llegó a entrar en producción.

En 1944 se fabricaron un total de 22.500 Maultier de los que 1.480 fueron transformados en Sd.Kfz 4. En 1943 la empresa Opel recibió la orden de construir vehículos blindados equipados con lanzacohetes 15 cm Panzererfer 42. En total se fabricaron unos 300 vehículos que fueron designados como Sd.Kfz 4/1. Debido al peso del lanzador el vehículo tan sólo alcanzaba los 40 Km/h  de velocidad máxima. El peso final del vehículo alcanzaba las 7´1 toneladas de peso, debido al lanzacohetes y el blindaje de 8 mm. El vehículo tenía una dotación de 4 hombres.

La inmensa mayoría de los Maultiers usaban el tren de rodaje tipo británico Carden-Loyd, con la excepción del tipo L4500R, que utiliza el tren de rodaje del PzKpfw II. El motor era un Opel de 6 cilindros con una transmisión de 5 marchas hacia delante y 1 marcha atrás. La autonomía alcanzaba los 130 Km y estaba equipado con una radio FuG Spr G f. Tanto el Sd.Kfz 4 como el Sd.Kfz 4/1 contaban con una ametralladora MG 34 o MG 42 de 7´92 mm para su autodefensa con una dotación de 2.000 proyectiles. Esta ametralladora tenía un giro transversal de 270º con una elevación máxima de +80º y mínima de -12º.

The Sd.Kfz 4 was a half-track of 4.5 tonnes based on the armored vehicle that was developed Maultier after checking the difficulties experienced in the mobility of the Eastern Front.
